Tottenham fans have flocked onto social media to hit out at Paul Merson's comments concerning former star striker Harry Kane.

The 31-year-old, who is currently plying his trade with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, remains a heroic figure at Hotspur Way, scoring 280 goals during his long and illustrious career in North London.

Since moving to Germany, Kane has bagged 70 goals in 72 appearances, but recently, it has emerged that the striker has a £54million release clause activating in the summer of 2026 [Christian Falk].

This news, of course, has sent supporters into pandemonium, with a potential return to the Lilywhites already being mooted, but Merson's claims of a move to Arsenal have struck a nerve or two.

Paul Merson makes new Harry Kane claim

Speaking via Sky Sports News [6 February], Merson said: "Arsenal will buy him. Why not? Sol Campbell did. If he’s available, for me it is [a bargain].

"Arsenal need to take a chance. Buy someone who’s proven, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

Safe to say, it hasn't gone down well with the supporters, who have already dubbed his claim "ridiculous", with another asking if it is already time for April Fools after hearing his on-air comments.

Tottenham star to sign for North London rivals?

As Merson states, Kane signing for Arsenal after playing for Spurs would not be the first instance in history of a player featuring for both rivals.

However, the now Bayern striker became an absolute star during his time at Hotspur Way, writing himself into the history books at every opportunity.

Also, £54million is a lot of money to splash on a player, who could be 33 years of age once his release clause is activated at the Allianz Arena.

Would Daniel Levy willingly open his wallet and splash that amount of cash? Only time will tell, but if his transfer strategy is anything to go by, supporters will not be holding their breath.

While the winter transfer window has been slightly different this time around, with Kevin Danso, Mathys Tel and Mason Melia, Johan Lange has faced criticism from a frustrated set of supporters.
