Tottenham fans all say same thing about Xavi Simons after debut vs West Ham

While getting to the games is tricky, given his job, one of the highlights of his life was watching (and crying) as the Black Cats defeated Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium last season.

Tottenham supporters finally got to see Xavi Simons in action after his late summer switch from PSG.

Spurs romped to a 3-0 win at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Pape Matar Sarr, Micky Van de Ven, and Lucas Bergvall.

The North London side had an early goal ruled out, and James Maddison could face FA action after his reaction to the incident.

As for Simons, supporters were all in agreement after what he did against the Hammers in his full debut.

Xavi Simons impresses on Tottenham debut vs West Ham

As expected, Simons was handed a start by Thomas Frank as he mixed up his starting lineup against the Hammers.

The Netherlands international started on the left in place of Brennan Johnson, with Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel making up a front three.

Spurs' new number seven was on corner duties and delivered a pinpoint curling ball, which was met by Sarr at the back post.

One fan on X said: "Happy with Simons' performance as well, lovely moments from him. He just needs to up his fitness now."

Another added: "Xavi Simons is absolutely incredible."

However, some fans suggested that the 22-year-old could do even better if he were played more centrally.

One supporter said: "I believe he would thrive even more in a central role rather than being deployed out wide."

Has Xavi Simons been more effective centrally during his career?

With Maddison out injured, the Lilywhites were desperate to land an attacking-midfielder and finally acquired Simons.

During his career, the 22-year-old has played more as a left-winger, although he does possess better numbers in a central role.

  • He has 36 goal contributions in 60 appearances on the left
  • Simons has 38 goal contributions in 48 appearances centrally
  • The forward made 46 goal contributions in 78 appearances for RB Leipzig

While his game is about more than numbers, it is clear that he has been more productive in a central role.

Frank has mixed up his side regularly so far this season, meaning he may well offer Simons a new role soon.
