Dan Plumley has insisted that Tottenham deciding to play Newcastle in Australia only days after the Premier League season finishes is purely a financial decision.

The football finance expert admitted that it was a strange move by the club, but business objectives are very much at the centre of it.

It is expected that Spurs could earn up to £3million from the Melbourne fixture, with added-on incentives from food, drink and merchandise sales.

"I would stick my neck out and say that is purely a financial decision," he exclusively told Tottenham News.

"It's just a strange one, there is no other reason that you could come to in your mind.

"To fly all that way, three days after the season finishes is nothing more than a marketing and commercial objective in mind, which is absolutely fine in the modern game.

"The timing does seem slightly strange though, doesn't it, so it's a business move very much at the centre of that."

Daniel Levy makes yet more business moves at Tottenham

There are fresh doubts currently surrounding the friendly, with Gareth Southgate and now the PFA set to call out the "ludicrous" decision.

Football, for many, is unfortunately a business, and nobody takes advantage more of that than Levy, who stands to gain more financial power from this.

Whether it still goes ahead or not, is another matter.
