Bryan King has speculated there could be an issue between Ryan Mason and Tottenham behind the scenes.

It comes after the 33-year-old, who is part of Ange Postecoglou's coaching staff, was in talks to take over the vacant managerial position at Anderlecht (via The Sun, 9 October, page 51).

Mason will remain at Tottenham after deciding now wasn't the time to make the move to Belgium (via The Standard, 10 October).

However, King - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - is curious to know the true reason behind talks breaking down.

“Mason has been there long enough,” King said.

“He is supposedly one of Postecoglou’s right-hand men. Therefore, he also needs to start producing the goods. However, does he want a long-term future at Tottenham, or will he continue looking elsewhere?

“Why did the Anderlecht talks break down? There could be a behind-the-scenes problem, which means it is time for Mason to move on. However, if not, he must be 100 per cent behind Postecoglou and Spurs.”

Ryan Mason goes close to leaving Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou

Mason is an important part of the backroom staff at Spurs. He has twice taken the reigns as interim manager of the club. Therefore, he is likely valued very highly in North London.

As a result, losing Mason would have been a big blow to Postecoglou and Tottenham. Everybody will no doubt be delighted he is staying put.

However, now that he has come close to leaving once, that could have potentially caused some unrest or tension behind the scenes, with Mason's loyalty and commitment to Postecolgou's project perhaps in question.

Therefore, the next time an opportunity to leave arises, the former midfielder could decide to take it.
