The cruel irony that sent Tottenham on their way to defeat vs Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur were hit with a frustrating blow when Micky Van de Ven was forced off against Aston Villa.

The Netherlands international has come under fire at times, but remains an important asset in North London.

He wasn't able to stop the inevitable as Unai Emery's side went 3-0 up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That felt like normal service for the home fans as they grow tired of what they are watching week in, week out.

Things had actually started well for Spurs as chances were flowing, that until the away side opened the scoring.

He was single-handedly able to keep the scoreline down in the opening exchanges.

It all turned when Van de Ven collided in the air with Tyrone Mings and was forced off with a facial injury.

Manzambi went on to find the net with the Dutchman off the pitch, leaving many frustrated with the time the defender spent on the sidelines.

The brutal irony is that Villa had previously been left annoyed by a similar event.

The Switzerland international had previously been forced to leave the pitch for at least a minute after treatment from medical staff.

That came off the back of a poor challenge from Rodrigo Bentancur, but Villa were reduced to 10-men.

Just 12 minutes later he was scoring the opener while Van de Ven faced the same fate.

When your luck is out it's out, but let's be honest, the defender didn't cover himself in much glory when on the pitch anyway.

How did Micky Van de Ven perform vs Aston Villa?

The 25-year-old hasn't had the greatest start to the season, just like the rest of his teammates.

That was brutally clear against the Villans as he was torn apart as Nicolas Jackson scored the away side's second of the day.

The Netherlands international did still manage to put up six defensive actions, although he did lose three duels on the day.

There are plus points in the shape of his 33.6km/h top speed, the fastest on the pitch, and his 93 per cent pass accuracy.

The problem is, in the moments when it mattered, Van de Ven wasn't good enough and it cost Tottenham massively.
