Sources: Barcelona and Real Madrid to monitor Tottenham star Cristian Romero
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are monitoring Cristian Romero's situation in North London, Tottenham News has been told.
Romero has been a key player so far this season for Ange Postecoglou, starting 15 of Spurs' 20 Premier League fixtures, only missing out due to injury or suspension.
He has made 79 appearances for the club since joining from Serie A outfit Atalanta two and a half years ago in a deal worth £42million (Sky Sports News, 7 August 2021).
Romero has scored four goals and provided one assist during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and some of his eye-catching defensive displays have caught the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs.
A recruitment source with links to Spanish football has revealed to Tottenham News that Real Madrid and Barcelona are both keeping an eye on the 25-year-old.
Should Spurs miss out on UEFA Champions League football this season, both clubs could look to lure the defender to La Liga. Tottenham News has been told that if Romero were to become available, Real Madrid and Barcelona would both "be in like a shot".
The centre-back will feel as if he deserves to be playing Champions League football regularly, with his international performances showcasing he is one of the best defenders around.
Romero was a key part of Argentina's World Cup success at Qatar 2022 and the nation's Copa America victory in 2021.
However, the Tottenham ace has a contract until June 2027 with his current club, and should any side look to make a move for him this summer, Daniel Levy would likely command a big fee with three years still to run on Romero's deal.
Ange Postecoglou will be keen to keep hold of his star man as he continues to rebuild his defence at Hotspur Way, with Spurs recently announcing the signing of centre-back Radu Dragusin from Genoa in a deal which could rise to £25.7million (Fabrizio Romano, 11 January).
