Jarrad Branthwaite could replace Cristian Romero in the Tottenham starting lineup next season.

Romero has been linked to Atletico Madrid this summer, and will need replacing if he leaves Tottenham.

Tottenham have identified Everton defender Branthwaite as that potential replacement, and after a recent transfer development, it looks as though Tottenham might already be resigned to losing Romero.

Tottenham ready to formalise Branthwaite transfer interest

As reported by the Daily Mail (9 June), Tottenham are expected to formalise their interest in Branthwaite next week.

Any deal for the centre-back is expected to cost Tottenham big money. Therefore, it is unlikely that a deal would be sanctioned if Romero is set to remain in North London.

As a result, Spurs' willingness to now formalise their interest in Branthwaite suggests they are already aware that Romero is set for a move away, and the 27-year-old's exit might have even already been agreed.

Romero was thought to have developed a close bond with Ange Postecoglou. Therefore, the recent confirmation of Postecoglou's sacking might have convinced the Argentine to leave Tottenham.

The World Cup winner's silence on Postecoglou's departure is deafening, especially as he is one of only a handful of Tottenham players to not comment on the Australian's sacking publicly.

Therefore, it would not be surprising if Romero's exit has already been agreed behind the scenes, and Tottenham are finalising his replacement before confirming his departure.

Tottenham should seal Branthwaite's signing

Branthwaite has had a stand-out season for Everton, and David Moyes is keen on keeping him.

However, the allure of playing for one of the Premier League's 'Big Six' and UEFA Champions League football could convince Branthwaite to move to North London.

The 22-year-old is known to dominate aerially while covering the spaces left behind. He is calm when in possession and aggressive when without which would suit a partnership with Micky van de Ven.

Branthwaite has also made 30 appearances for Everton in the Premier League this season, while Romero only managed 18 for Spurs. While a massive loss for the North London side, Romero's exit may turn out to benefit them in the long run if Branthwaite is signed as a replacement.
