Leroy Sane could 'blow open' Tottenham wage structure already - Exclusive

Paul Robinson

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson played 175 times for Tottenham between 2004 and 2008, winning the League Cup with Spurs in the 2007/08 season. Since hanging up his gloves in 2017, Robinson has moved into the world of punditry and can be regularly seen or heard on Sky Sports and BBC Radio 5 Live. Tottenham News is now delighted to present Robinson as part of its team of experts.

Leroy Sane has emerged as a potential summer transfer target for Tottenham.

With a season in the Champions League to look forward to, it is evident that Spurs have a lot of work to do in the transfer window if they are to have any chance of competing.

Their lack of squad depth was showcased by their 17th-placed finish in the Premier League, though their Europa League triumph subdued some of those concerns.

With that in mind, Tottenham are eying a move to sign former Man City forward Sane, though they will need to overcome a massive barrier to seal a deal.

Tottenham want to sign Sane this summer

Spurs need attacking reinforcements heading into the new campaign, and Sane has been identified as a potential target.

However, Paul Robinson has highlighted the one concern that will linger over a potential deal, which could see the German move elsewhere.

Speaking to Tottenham News, he said: "Without a doubt, he'd improve the starting XI. I think it is immediately a competition for places for Brennan Johnson.

"We see that Son's dropped off this season. His form hasn't been the best every single week, week in and week out, as we've become accustomed to, and he's not getting any younger.

"Sane, without a shadow of a doubt, starts. He's that good of a player, but the wages that he carries, Tottenham have a wage structure. They've had a wage structure for a number of years, ever since I've been there and before that. There's a wage structure, and if he doesn't fit into that, then there's an issue.

"I think that Leroy Sane will have other offers of destinations, landing spots, call them what you like, of more lucrative offers than Tottenham are able to offer him.

"We know that Tottenham are not great payers in comparison to other top European clubs, so that could be a stumbling block, but for me, absolutely, he's an upgrade on what we've got."

Tottenham need to deal smartly this summer

Champions League football requires a whole new level of squad depth, which is something that Tottenham simply do not have.

That needs to change this summer, while also ensuring that the starting 11 receives a fresh injection of quality.

Spurs will be afforded no margin for error on the recruitment front, with the window now officially open.
