Keith Hackett slams 'sloppy' referee after Tottenham's Andy Robertson fouled in Scotland draw vs Slovenia

Andy Robertson was impacted by "sloppy" refereeing decisions as Scotland drew with Slovenia on Saturday.

That's according to former Premier League and FIFA referee Keith Hackett, who was critical of how Horatiu Fesnic managed the game starring the Tottenham left-back.

Sebastien Pocognoli's first game in charge of Scotland ended in a goalless draw, despite the Tartan Army having a huge number of chances to break the deadlock in the second half.

Robertson, 32, was booked for an off-the-ball incident in the first half, which appeared to come as a result of frustration for a foul he conceded moments earlier.

However, that wasn't the moment that drew criticism from Hackett.

That came after the Tottenham summer signing was fouled in the 82nd minute.

Late in the game, Robertson was the victim of a very poor challenge from Slovenia's Zan Karnicnik.

The Spurs star was picking up the ball out wide after a clearance from the Slovenia penalty area.

He took a touch to take the ball back towards the goal, but a late lunge came in from Maribor right-back Karnicnik and brought him down.

However, even though it was a blatant foul, Romanian referee Fesnic allowed play to continue for a good five seconds before blowing his whistle and then booking Karnicnik.

After seeing footage of the incident, and seeing how Fesnic regularly took his time to blow his whistle throughout the Nations League tie in Ljubljana, Hackett shared how unimpressed he was.

"There are fouls where the referee can look to apply an advantage to aid game flow," said the former referee.

"However, possession is not always an advantage and his tolerance level is set too high.

"Several fouls have taken place that required an immediate award of a free kick.

"His application of law is sloppy. He is putting his control at risk and losing authority and respect."

What record is Andy Robertson on the verge of smashing for Scotland?

Although Robertson couldn't help Scotland win all three points in Slovenia on Saturday, the Spurs star is on the verge of a major accomplishment of his own.

Robertson picked up his 98th Scotland cap in the Slovenian capital, meaning that he should become only second Scot in history to win 100 caps in this international break.

The ex-Liverpool man is primed to get his 99th at Hampden Park against Switzerland on Tuesday, and should then get his 100th against either North Macedonia next Saturday, or back in Hampden versus Slovenia the following Tuesday.

Sir Kenny Dalglish is currently Scotland's record cap holder with 102 appearances for the Tartan Army.

That means that while Robertson won't break that record in this international break, he could do it in November against Switzerland.

He would, however, have to play all five of Scotland's fixtures in this and the next international break if he wants to achieve the record in 2026.
