Dan Plumley says the FA had a legal obligation over the Rodrigo Bentancur case before his ban was confirmed at Tottenham.

The Uruguayan midfielder has been fined and banned for seven matches after a racial remark on Spurs teammate Son Heung-min.

Spurs have appealed the severity of the ban, but Plumley insists it was never going to play out any other way with the FA needing to clamp down on this issue.

"There's no two ways about it," the football finance expert exclusively told Tottenham News.

"It's interesting in terms of the case because it's a teammate and also, because the comment was made in his own time, it falls under FA jurisdiction, a little bit different to the Enzo Fernandez case when he was on international duty.

"You've got that legal obligation that sits with the FA, and that's what this relates to and I know the club have come out and the players have made up with him apologising, but the FA have got a role to play there.

"It was always likely that you would see a fine and ban, and for sure, they have to be clamping down on these things, especially given the wider issues in football and society.

"It was never going to play out any other way."

Tottenham return to Premier League action against Manchester City on 23 November, with Bentancur out of action until the end of December.

Ange Postecoglou will have to make do with what he has in midfield, with Pape Mate Sarr and Yves Bissouma set to step in.
