Djed Spence told to make Tottenham transfer call to get 'back on track' after pre-season update

Tottenham News speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Tottenham from Rangers in 2008, winning the 2008 League Cup final in just his third game for the club. The former Scotland right-back went on to make 66 appearances in all competitions for Spurs before he left for Aston Villa in 2011. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Tottenham News' team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from North London.

Tottenham defender Djed Spence still needs to move away from North London to get his career "back on track", according to Alan Hutton.

The 23-year-old spent last season away from Ange Postecoglou's side with loan spells at both Leeds United and Genoa with reports suggesting the Italian club are keen to secure his services permanently [Fabrizio Romano, 3 July].

Spence had appeared to be surplus to requirements under the Australian heading into the new season, but the coaching staff have been impressed by the right-back's displays in the opening weeks of pre-season [Football London, 24 July].

Although some have suggested the defender may be handed another chance by Postecoglou, Hutton is worried he would struggle for game time at Spurs and expects him to complete a transfer away this summer.

"It's really up in the air isn't it?" Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

"You've got to feel for him, he made the big-money move to Tottenham and it didn't quite work out for him.

"I thought he was a very good attacking fullback who was only going to get better. But for whatever reason, I know his attitude has been questioned, that's not from me and is just what I read so I don't really know.

"It's really down to him now, he's even further down the pecking order than the likes of Emerson Royal so it is going to be difficult.

"You would like to think he could get a move and really get his career back on track and show everyone what he's capable of and then kick on again.

"But if that doesn't materialise, you start to worry for him a little bit because he's not going to get any minutes at all which is going to be difficult for him and then for him when he does move on.

"You'd like to think that before the end of the summer, he will get a move."

Will Djed Spence exit Tottenham in summer transfer window despite transfer update?

As Hutton suggests, Spence will at best be behind Pedro Porro in Postecoglou's pecking order next term and at worst he could slip behind Emerson Royal as well if the Brazilian doesn't move away from North London.

His displays in pre-season may have caught the eye of the Lilywhites boss and his coaching team, but that doesn't mean he will suddenly become a regular fixture of Tottenham's backline.

It is in all parties' interest for a permanent solution to be found sooner rather than later so that Spurs can get the defender off of their wage bill and the 23-year-old can get back to playing consistent first-team football.

Hopefully, someone will make a push to sign Spence in the coming weeks.
