Tottenham defender Djed Spence has faced mixed reviews after being forced on as England beat Panama on Saturday.

The full-back started on the bench at the MetLife Stadium as Thomas Tuchel rotated his defence again.

Reece James was missing through injury and his role was handed to Bayer Leverkusen's Jarell Quansah.

The former Liverpool man seriously struggled even while the Three Lions went on to secure three points.

Goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane made all the difference in the end as Spence was eventually called on.

The Tottenham man came on after 63 minutes and attracted up-and-down reports in New York as England won 2-0/

There were calls for the Spurs defender to start once again in the absence of the Chelsea skipper.

They are the only two recognised right-back's in the squad after Tino Livramento withdrew from the squad due to injury.

That didn't see Tuchel give Spence the nod in the final group-stage fixture as Quansah started and put in a poor showing before being taken off due to injury.

The Lilywhites full-back came on his place with over 25 minutes to go and, as put by The Independent, had a "shaky start".

The newspaper did go on to say that "he did well" as time went on to help the Three Lions to a clean sheet.

BBC Sport outlined that Spence "kept things simple" after replacing his injured colleague.

Sky Sports echoed The Independent by questioning the 25-year-old, picking out that Spence was "beaten in the air a couple of times".

They then praised his "promising forward runs" as the mixed reviews continue to come in for the defender.

Quansah was regularly found out of position and failed to win a single ground duel attempt.

It was frustrating to lose him through injury, but he arguably should have been taken off before that.

Spence came on and put up better output immediately as he chipped in with three defensive actions and one ground duel win.

He also attempted one cross, completed two passes into the final third and maintained a 93 per cent pass accuracy in the process.

The fact that he didn't create a chance will be a source of frustration as that sparked some of the negative reviews from the media.
