Tottenham have announced the departures of several players, with Japhet Tanganga's exit perhaps the most surprising.

Daniel Levy looks to have missed out on the opportunity to pocket some extra cash in North London.

Spurs announced via their official website on Wednesday (5 June) that Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon and Tanganga are all to leave the club following the conclusion of their contracts.

While the names on this list won't come as much of a surprise, the nature of Tanganga's exit might.

It always looked likely that the defender would leave the club one way or another this summer.

However, Spurs seemed to be in a position where they would at least profit from his departure.

Fabrizio Romano revealed last month via X (12 May) that Spurs and Millwall had agreed a permanent transfer for Tanganga, with the North London club keen to sell him.

This implied that Tottenham would receive a fee for the 24-year-old.

This, of course, now won't be possible.

Tottenham supporters will be confused by Japhet Tanganga's departure

It seems strange for Spurs to allow a player to leave when they could have sold him for a fee.

As per Alasdair Gold via X (5 June), Tottenham had the opportunity to extend Tanganga's contract by another year.

This would have allowed the club to then sell him on for a profit, and it seems strange that they haven't chosen to do this.

There will have been a reason behind this decision, but on the surface, it appears that Levy has missed out on potentially a few million pounds.

Tottenham
Japhet Tanganga will leave Tottenham for free.

Tanganga came through Spurs' academy and has contributed to the club since making his first-team debut.

Perhaps the decision to release him was a gesture of goodwill from Tottenham toward one of their own.

The player will now find it easier to negotiate with a new club as a free agent.

Whether or not that is the reason is not clear, but what is clear is that Levy has suffered financially from this.
