Cristian Romero speaks out on Daniel Levy in new Tottenham exit admission

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has been speaking openly ahead of the Champions League clash with Villarreal.

There was significant speculation around the defender's future this summer, with Romero heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.

However, Romero committed his long-term future to Spurs by signing a contract to keep him at the North London club until 2029.

As well as opening up about rumours he wanted to leave the Lilywhites, he also discussed departed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Daniel Levy called time on his Tottenham tenure after a memorable 24 years at the North London club.

During his reign, he oversaw substantial change at Spurs and was responsible for some iconic moments.

Indeed, he was also responsible for signing some quality players for the Lilywhites, with Romero certainly falling into that category.

Now, the World Cup winner has spoken out on Levy's departure during a Champions League press conference on 15 September.

"I don't know what's happened, but he is a person who has been at the club for a good many years," Romero told reporters.

"We need to thank him. He brought me here. Fortunately, we could crown his reign with a trophy. I wish the very best."

Cristian Romero hits out at media after Spurs exit rumours

As the 2024/25 season drew to a close, there was genuine concern that the Argentinian would leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Indeed, when Spurs relieved Ange Postecoglou of his duties, that also seemed to stoke the fire about Romero's possible exit.

However, the 28-year-old went on to dispel the suggestions that he ever wanted to leave the North London club.

"Sometimes in football, stuff that comes out in the media.... I never said I wanted to leave the club," he said.

"Nothing came from me in that effect. It is important what the manager and president say.

"I am very happy here; it is like a family. I like the manager. I like the way we work, the way we train. Always things can improve, but I think everyone here at all levels are taking the right steps to improve. I am very happy here."

Romero's early-season performances suggest that he is happy with the Lilywhites and he has looked a player inspired under Frank.
