Dan Bardell has piled praise on Cristian Romero after the Tottenham star reached the Copa America semi-finals with Argentina.

The 26-year-old has featured in three of La Albiceleste's four games, missing only the final group game after qualification was already secured.

In their last game, despite a missed Lionel Messi penalty, some Emi Martinez heroics were enough to help Argentina to the final four.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has backed Romero for a "huge" role next season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: "I think every season, Romero has gotten better.

"He does have the odd moment of madness but he's getting used to the Premier League and getting better.

"He's an almost undisputed starting centre-back for Argentina and he's played a lot for them. It's great for Spurs to see him go and have a great Copa America and reach the semi-final as a minimum now.

"He will need rest but he will come back and play a huge role for Spurs next season."

Tottenham star Christian Romero set for huge role

Since signing from Atalanta, the centre-back has been one of the most consistent forces in the Tottenham squad under multiple managers.

This form has been translated onto the international stage where he has won a Copa America and a World Cup over the years.

Romero lined up to face Ecuador and would have been frustrated not to have picked up a clean sheet after he conceded a late equaliser.

Tottenham, Cristian Romero
Tottenham should do all they can to keep hold of Cristian Romero.

Moving into the new season, Romero will be hopeful of continuing his positive form and Spurs fans can be hopeful of more positive defensive performances.
