Tottenham defender Djed Spence has received further backing after his England cameo against Norway.

The versatile full-back has certainly had a mixed bag of a summer at the World Cup.

Some of his performances at the tournament have certainly caused frustration, even with Thomas Tuchel.

That has been overtaken by positive reviews recently after he came on in the quarter-final on Saturday.

England secured a 2-1 win in extra time after a nervy encounter was sealed by a Jude Bellingham brace.

Things could have been different if Spence had been awarded a penalty as Chris Foy has had his say on proceedings.

Chris Foy verdict clear on Djed Spence decision vs Norway

The 25-year-old came on with just four minutes of normal time remaining to try and turn the tide for the Three Lions.

He wasn't able to do that in normal time, but nearly had a telling impact after Bellingham had made it 2-1.

Spence charged into the penalty area and went down under contact from Oscar Bobb.

A spot kick was awarded before VAR asked referee Clement Turpin to review the decision, before he ultimately ruled it out.

Former Premier League referee Foy doesn't agree with the call which has certainly divided opinion.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday, he said: "The one that I found interesting, and I think there's a 50:50 split on this, is the penalty award on Djed Spence.

"It was given on field and the referee went to the monitor. VAR thought it was a clear and obvious error, I thought that was a penalty and I didn't think it was an error."

It's clear that even an ex-official can't understand why it wasn't given, which will only raise frustration for the Spurs defender.

Spence deserved more in England win vs Norway

After coming under fire throughout the tournament, the 25-year-old certainly silenced some doubters in Miami.

He came on to feature for 34 minutes and certainly helped as the quarter-final entered extra time.

Spence looked to make a difference going forward as he maintained a 100 per cent shot accuracy and also completed every dribble he attempted.

That was summed up by his penalty win as it took Bobb to bring him down to stop him, even if it was ruled out in the end.

His defensive qualities were also on show as his seven defensive actions and four duel wins helped see out a massive result for the Three Lions.

There was so much to appreciate about his performance and it is so frustrating that he wasn't awarded that penalty to put icing on the cake.
