Celtic send touching Postecoglou message after Tottenham victory over Man United
Celtic have congratulated Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou after his side beat Manchester United in the Europa League final.
Brennan Johnson pounced on a mix-up between Andre Onana and Luke Shaw in the first half to tap home and see Spurs surpass United 1-0 in Bilbao, ending a 17-year wait for a trophy.
Victory will grant the North London club participation in the Champions League next season, despite sitting 17th in the Premier League before the final day.
Celtic congratulate former manager Ange
Postecoglou has faced huge criticism this season for Spurs’ league performances, but the Australian has backed up a claim he made in August.
“Usually in my second season, I win things,” Postecoglou said before reaffirming the statement in September.
At Celtic, the club he joined Spurs from, the 59-year-old did just that, winning the domestic treble in his second season after winning the league and league cup double in his first.
And his former club were quick to congratulate their old manager, taking to X (21 May) following the final whistle.
“A winner once again. Never in doubt. He never stops! Congratulations Ange,” the Scottish giants posted.
Celtic fans were disappointed when Postecoglou left, but the Australian is clearly remembered fondly by the green and white side of Glasgow.
Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs future still in doubt
Once the party in Tottenham dies down, upper management at the club will have a difficult decision to make.
Despite the North London club’s success in Europe, domestically it has been nothing short of a disastrous season.
Spurs will finish fourth from bottom of the table in the Premier League should they fail to beat Brighton on the final day.
They have lost a jaw-dropping 21 matches, managing only 11 wins from 37 so far, with just five coming away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The club’s participation in the Champions League next season will add much-needed financial aid and attraction for possible signings, but Spurs must decide if Postecoglou is the man to lead the club forward.
It is true that the club have struggled massively with injuries this season, however, and decision-makers may give the benefit of the doubt.
Postecoglou is sure to be walking a tightrope should he be backed for next season, though, with any continuation of this season’s league form likely resulting in an early-season sacking.
