Ange Postecoglou set to make Lucas Bergvall decision in Tottenham starting XI v Leicester City

Paul Robinson

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson played 175 times for Tottenham between 2004 and 2008, winning the League Cup with Spurs in the 2007/08 season. Since hanging up his gloves in 2017, Robinson has moved into the world of punditry and can be regularly seen or heard on Sky Sports and BBC Radio 5 Live. Tottenham News is now delighted to present Robinson as part of its team of experts.

Ange Postecoglou will not choose Lucas Bergvall for his Tottenham starting XI to face Leicester City on Monday (19 August), Paul Robinson has predicted.

The 18-year-old has hugely impressed since arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, claiming assists against Hearts and Bayern Munich in pre-season friendlies.

While he has been a regular during pre-season matches, Robinson does not expect any "big surprises" from Postecoglou ahead of Spurs' opening match of the new Premier League season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: "I can't really see any big surprises. Bergvall will come off the bench - it's too early for him at 18 years of age.

"He's got a bright future but look at the plethora of attacking quality in those areas, with Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner or Son Heung-Min on the left. Bergvall will certainly be an option off the bench, at the start of the season anyway.

"We'll definitely see him start games, whether that be in the League Cup or early rounds of the European games. He'll have a big part to play but not in the first game."

Lucas Bergvall set to be snubbed ahead of Tottenham v Leicester City

While Bergvall has shown great promise since transitioning from life in Sweden with Djurgarden, it is far too soon for the youngster to be given his Premier League debut in the opening game of the season.

James Maddison is much more likely to occupy the attacking midfield role, with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr creating a barrier behind him.

Postecoglou will be extremely pleased with the 18-year-old's development at Spurs already, but it would probably be best to introduce him into the side slowly as the season trundles along.

Saying that, injuries can strike at any time, so it will be comforting to know that Bergvall is ready to go if he's needed to occupy a central midfield spot.
