Ange Postecoglou wants to revive his interest in Tottenham transfer target Ko Itakura, according to GiveMeSport.

The news outlet reported on Friday (27 December) that Spurs are seriously contemplating rekindling their interest in Itakura to ease the ongoing injury crisis in North London after opting against signing the centre-back in 2023.

Postecoglou is "definitely" eager to sign a defender in January and the Premier League club could test Borussia Monchengladbach's resolve with a formal offer when the transfer window opens.

It is claimed that a cut-price deal is potentially doable if the player does not agree a new deal with his current side.

Tottenham want to sign Ko Itakura

Spurs have been linked with every available central defender under the sun ahead of January.

Feyenoord centre-back David Hancko has emerged as a genuine transfer target in North London [TBR Football], whereas former Everton defender Mason Holgate is also among the names currently being considered to bolster the backline [The Sun].

However, Postecoglou will line up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the clash against Wolves on Sunday (29 December) without a senior centre-back in his squad after Ben Davies suffered a fresh injury setback and will join Radu Dragusin, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero on the sidelines.

Fortunately for the Australian, he only has one fixture before the winter transfer window opens and four days until he hosts Newcastle United in the Premier League to address the situation.

Itakura has been a first-team regular in the Bundesliga since returning to Germany via FC Groningen after winning the German second tier with FC Schalke.

He is a player Postecoglou knows well, and while he may not have been deemed better than the preferred centre-back pairing of Van de Ven and Romero. He certainly represents a significant upgrade on the current crop of names linked with a move to Tottenham.
