Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rio Kyerematen has been dealt a cruel injury blow ahead of the new season kicking off later this month.

The 21-year-old started pre-season friendly wins against MK Dons, Auckland FC, Sydney FC and Chelsea this summer.

He was the only player to complete 90 minutes of the 1-0 victory over MK Dons, playing in a less-than-familiar left-back role.

Roberto De Zerbi then called upon Kyerematen to fill in at left-back against Auckland and Sydney, before he had to make do with a spot on the bench against Chelsea.

While the London-born sensation came off the bench against Xabi Alonso's side on 1 August, he managed to strike the crossbar before he was forced off in stoppage time due to a hamstring injury.

And that comes as an unfortunate blow for De Zerbi.

Rio Kyerematen's injury issue assessed

According to Tottenham News contributor John Wenham, Kyerematen has "impressed De Zerbi and the first-team coaching staff" this summer.

Writing via his Lilywhite Rose Instagram account, Wenham added that the versatle former England Under-18 international will be sidelined "for a while".

Kyerematen replaced Andrew Robertson at left-back in that 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup.

Although his time on the pitch was limited, he had to be helped off the pitch moments after hitting the crossbar from 22 yards out.

Spurs have two more friendlies to play against Getafe and Hoffenheim before they kick off their Premier League campaign against Brentford on 22 August.

But will Kyerematen be available for those games?

How long Kyerematen will be out of action

Unfortunately, Wenham's update on Kyerematen doesn't look great.

If he's pulled it, he could be out of action for a matter of weeks, while a partial tear can potentially leave him sidelined for a couple of months.

In the worst-case scenario, a several tear or rupture could see Kyerematen out for several months or more, especially if surgery is required.

We have to hope that it's not the latter and that he's suffering from at worst a moderate issue

Either way, it's unlikely that he'll be in line to play against Brentford later this month, based on the news available right now.
