James Maddison injury: Tottenham midfielder 'could miss start of next season'

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison is expected to miss the rest of the season and might even be forced to sit out the first few games of next season.

Maddison's injury is a big blow to Tottenham, with the Lilywhites looking to reach the UEFA Europa League final when they travel to Norway to take on Bodø/Glimt at the Aspmyra Stadion on Thursday (8 May).

The midfielder suffered his injury in the 3-1 win in the first leg against Bodø/Glimt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (1 May).

Maddison is expected to miss the rest of the season, and things could yet get worse for the 28-year-old.

Maddison could be sidelined for four months

As well as Maddison, Tottenham are expected to be without Lucas Bergvall for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old has suffered an ankle injury and is expected to be sidelined for two months [Fotbolldirekt], which means he would be ready for the start of the new season in August.

However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - has suggested Maddison could be sidelined for up to four months, which would see the playmaker return to action in September after the new season has already started.

"This is a big blow for Maddison and Tottenham," King said.

"Until we know exactly what the issue is, we don't know exactly how long it will take him to recover. I finished my career with a bad knee. However, the medical treatment is a lot better these days.

"If it is a bad knee injury, Maddison could be out for three or four months. Therefore, I'd imagine any holiday plans will be shelved, and he could be spending the summer rehabilitating. However, until we know the extent of the injury, I can only wish him well."

Maddison is a big loss for Tottenham

Maddison's superb performance in the first leg emphasises just how big a miss the Spurs star will be in Norway. However, Tottenham cannot use his absence as an excuse.

Postecoglou's side will arrive at the Aspmyra Stadion with a two-goal lead and must ensure they do everything in their power to protect it, even without Maddison.
