Cristian Romero could remain at Tottenham this summer despite interest from Atletico Madrid.

The defender has been widely linked with Atletico Madrid despite Spurs' hopes to retain him.

It was recently suggested that the Lilywhites could block Romero's departure until January. This would give the centre-back enough time to work under and hopefully form a strong connection with Thomas Frank.

However, it now seems Tottenham are set to take things a step further and attempt to renew the Argentine's contract.

Tottenham could demand £100million for Romero

It was previously reported that Daniel Levy could be prepared to accept a fee of around £40m for Romero.

The odds of a possible departure increased with the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, with whom the defender had a close bond.

And with Frank in need of committed players, it has been suggested that Romero has become a liability.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Atletico Madrid would demand £100m if they were selling Romero, and therefore believes Spurs shouldn't accept a cut-price deal.

“Tottenham’s stance has been clear from the outset,” Wenham said.

“These fees that Atletico were leaking to the Spanish press were never going to push the needle. Romero is now worth double what we signed him for.

“If we were trying to sign him from Atletico, they would want £100m. Therefore, if they don’t have the money, he can’t go. It’s as simple as that.

“Now, for Tottenham, it is about desperately trying to get him to renew his contract. Yes, there was some frustration about the number of games he missed last season.

“However, when you look at it in isolation, he was superb against Frankfurt and in the final. He’s a winner, and we need to keep those players around at the club.”

Tottenham need to sort out Romero's future

While Tottenham have been looking at potential defensive reinforcements, it seems that no senior player will join the club until Romero's future is confirmed.

This could become an issue later down the road. The question marks surrounding Romero could continue until the end of the transfer window.

If the defender decides he wants to leave and Atletico puts in an acceptable bid, Tottenham could be forced to sell toward the end of the summer. This would likely leave them without enough time to sign a replacement and would disrupt the new season.

Therefore, the Lilywhites should put an end to this transfer saga sooner rather than later.
