In The Money: Daniel Levy deserves praise as Tottenham overtake Arsenal and Chelsea
Tottenham have overtaken Arsenal and Chelsea to become the highest matchday earners of any club in the Premier League.
In the latest figures shared by UEFA, as per The Sun’s print edition [16 February, page 54], Spurs’ revenue has risen to nearly £550million.
The Lilywhites’ gate receipts of £116m last season place them behind only Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain among European clubs.
That means even the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus & Co all trail in Tottenham’s wake.
Tottenham wage bill
Spurs’ £247m wage bill is the ninth highest in Europe – a list again headed by Barca and PSG – with Man City (£473m) top among English clubs.
Chairman Daniel Levy can often come in for criticism, but the report also shows Spurs lead the way in a different category.
No team among Europe’s top 20 biggest earners has a better wage-to-revenue ratio (46 per cent).
This is particularly important in the current climate given all the PSR and FFP talk. Tottenham appear in no danger of breaching those rules.
These figures come on the back of a report that shows Tottenham brought in an average of £71.23 per fan in the 2021-22 campaign.
Premier League clubs lead the way
As per football finance expert Kieran Maguire, no Premier League team could better that figure, so Tottenham are clearly doing something right.
The move to the new stadium has helped in that regard, of course, but Levy does also deserve some praise for his part in these figures.

Interestingly, the report also adds that Premier League clubs grossed £5.5billion in income last season.
That is almost double the £3.8bn earned by LaLiga, the next on the list. It is also equal to the total income of the bottom 50 domestic leagues – a staggering divide.
The money will keep pouring in for Premier League clubs, it seems, and there is no reason why Spurs cannot keep topping these various lists.
