Tottenham: New Premier League rule change provides boost as £150m+ news emerges

Tottenham will benefit from changes made to the Profit and Sustainability Rules in the Premier League after figures were shared by finance expert Kieran Maguire.

The Athletic reported on 11 April that a meeting in London saw clubs unanimously agree on the change after Everton and Nottingham Forest were charged this year.

Instead, a new system will be introduced with a similar “squad cost control” rule to the one used by UEFA clubs, although it must be clarified at the Premier League’s AGM in June.

This would see Premier League teams allowed to spend up to 80 per cent of their total profits, allowing clubs with the money to spend, to spend it.

How will Tottenham be affected by Premier League rule changes?

One of those clubs is Tottenham, who according to Maguire, are currently £153.5million under the squad cost cap, a margin second only to Manchester City, with plenty of room for Spurs to spend before the threat of a breach emerges.

At the other end of the table is Chelsea, who currently sit £71.5million over the limit, and it appears they will have to sell players to get themselves back in line with the new rules after a huge spending spree in the last couple of transfer windows.

Spurs were never under threat of breaching the PSR rules in the Premier League thanks in large part to the prudent management of chairman Daniel Levy, but the new potential rules have given them plenty of room to spend and improve their squad.

With Ange Postecoglou on course to guide the club into the Champions League as things stand, the added revenue from playing in Europe’s premier competition will only increase Spurs’ spending capability to further strengthen his team.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has been told to drop one key player against Newcastle.
