Tottenham may be dealt £56m+ blow after UEFA update emerges in last 24 hours
Europa League defeats for both West Ham and Liverpool on 11 April have seen Germany edge above England in UEFA’s coefficient rankings, in a potential blow to Tottenham.
As reported by The Standard [12 April], with Italy having all but secured one of the two available slots, England and Germany will battle for the second.
With Germany moving ahead as things stand, this would mean any hope of a fifth-placed Premier League finish securing Champions League football would be dashed, meaning fourth place will be needed amid competition from Spurs, Aston Villa and Manchester United.
There was hope that even if the team missed out on a top-four finish, Champions League qualification would still be available – along with the financial incentives attached to it.
Tottenham must qualify for the Champions League this year
In a statement shared via the official Tottenham website [3 April], Spurs announced an increase in revenue across key factors such as match receipts, UEFA prize money, TV and Media revenue and commercial revenue.
As per the records, the club’s UEFA prize money rocketed from £10.2million in 2022 to £56.2million in 2023, highlighting the difference between a group-stage exit from the Europa Conference League (albeit impacted by COVID-19) and reaching the Champions League round of 16.
With Champions League qualification still up for grabs, it has become clear why pipping both Aston Villa and Manchester United to fourth place would be such a huge bonus on and off the pitch.

The impact of Champions League qualification will be felt both on and off the pitch, as it will prove a huge benefit to the club financially not just through prize money but also television revenue and exposure.
Meanwhile, being in the biggest and most coveted tournament in world football will inspire potential new signings to make the move, with the Champions League always a huge factor.
In other Tottenham news, a Premier League rule change has provided a £150million boost.
