Tottenham have blatant financial issue staring right at them after new Premier League reveal

Ange Postecoglou recently discussed the issues regarding wage spending at Tottenham, or rather, the lack of it.

The Australian claimed that Spurs do not act like a big club, despite the common consensus across the country being that Tottenham are one of England’s heavyweights.

Spurs have been perennial underachievers since the turn of the millennium, while their recent struggles have been masked by the Europa League win under Postecoglou last term.

Their lack of willingness to spend on wages has been well documented in recent years.

But a recent reveal from Kieran Maguire shows the exact problem that this continues to create at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, pointing in the direction of a significant financial problem that Spurs simply must amend if they wish to compete.

‘Big six’ reveal is incredibly worrying for Tottenham fans

As mentioned, Spurs’ wage issues are well-documented and have recently been backed up by Postecoglou.

But the reveal from Maguire is further worrying for Tottenham fans.

Maguire calculated the wages of all Premier League clubs since the competition’s inception, with figures adjusted for football inflation.

Shockingly, the Lillywhites do not appear on the list until 119th.

While post-takeover Manchester City and Chelsea dominate the early part of the standings, each of Tottenham’s fellow ‘big six’ members occupy multiple spots on the list.

Compared to last season’s champions Liverpool, Tottenham’s 2024-25 wage bill sat almost £150million lower, with £291.4m compared to £428m.

The simple fact of the matter is that with the above numbers in mind, Spurs are simply not prepared to fight at the top level in the modern football environment, with it being far from a coincidence that those with higher wage bills are the clubs performing all around.

That is all, despite clearly having the money to do so.

Tottenham’s spending issues could result in paying the ultimate price

Of course, Tottenham are a big club with a global fanbase, a state-of-the-art stadium, and the ability to attract players from across all parts of the world.

However, they simply do not act like one, and as a result, now find themselves in yet another ongoing relegation battle.

The ability to attract players has benefitted Spurs overall, but they have become, as of late, nothing more than a stepping-stone club, or a home for those not quite cut out for the elite level.

This sees Spurs carry a squad full of quality, but still a squad that is a level behind those consistently challenging for titles year in and year out.

And now, with the Premier League becoming more congested due to the spending power of the rest, Spurs have been fully dragged into the lower echelons after multiple poor transfer windows that they would have gotten away with just a decade ago.

The simple fact of the matter is that Tottenham should not be fighting against the drop. But it has to be acknowledged that they have sleepwalked into their current predicament, and could pay the ultimate price as a result.
