Tottenham: Daniel Levy must answer to fans amid £998million Premier League ‘shambles’

Tottenham supporters will be seeking clarity over the club and Daniel Levy’s position as the Premier League struggled to reach an agreement on a funding package for the EFL.

With all the controversy surrounding finances in football in recent months, Spurs have managed to keep themselves out of those headlines.

In fact, the majority of financial stories regarding Tottenham have been positive as of late, although it appears that Levy could now come under fire from Spurs supporters after a report this week.

As per John Cross via The Mirror (page 49, 12 March), Premier League clubs are at a “stalemate” over a new £998million funding package for clubs in the EFL, a deal which was first proposed in 2022.

Representatives from all 20 Premier League clubs met in London on Monday (11 March), with Cross’ report naming Levy as one of the attendees at the meeting.

Despite coming together for more than two hours, those in attendance could not agree to a deal, with the clubs struggling to agree on who would pay what. One source described the outcome of the meeting as a “shambles” with clubs unable to even reach the stage of taking a vote.

Richard Masters, the Premier League’s Chief Executive, has been told that a new Independent Regulator will step in if a deal cannot be agreed upon and is under pressure from the EFL, with chairman Rick Parry warning that several of the 72 EFL clubs will go under without increased support financially.

Premier League clubs feel as if they cannot commit to a new deal without knowing their budgets for next season after a vote was passed on a new framework for Profit and Sustainability rules during the meeting.

Amid talks of European Super League organisers also holding private meetings with Premier League clubs, it appears that Levy has a lot to answer for.

Tottenham supporters will want clarity on the club’s financial position from Daniel Levy

It seems as if there was a lot to digest at this one meeting, and Spurs supporters will feel as though they deserve some answers.

At a time when Tottenham have increased season ticket prices by six per cent, supporters who are being forced to pay more money will want to know where exactly that money is going.

Spurs continue to thrive financially, but supporters will want to see those financial successes pay off on the pitch, and they will therefore want to know just how Tottenham fit into this new deal with the EFL and what a new framework for Profit and Sustainability rules means for the club.

It is also important that Levy avoids involving himself in any talks with those looking to forge a European Super League, or he risks really ruining his reputation among Tottenham fans, which isn’t positive at the best of times.

Not only will Spurs supporters want answers over these topics, but they are entitled to those answers.

It is those supporters who are pouring the money into the club which is then distributed across these various deals, and they have every right to understand how their money is being spent.

In other Tottenham news, John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose believes a “great deal” is on the cards for one Spurs loanee this summer amid a £15million verdict.
