Tottenham: Daniel Levy could avoid £29m+ loss after Giovani Lo Celso performances

Daniel Levy could avoid a £29.5million loss in transfer fees after Giovani Lo Celso’s recent Tottenham performances under Ange Postecoglou’s guidance.

Lo Celso was signed for a permanent fee of £27.3million in 2020 after Spurs had already paid £15million in loan fees to Villarreal at a total cost of £42.3million on his transfer move [The Standard].

However, almost four years later, Spanish outlet Sport [25 September] reported Tottenham were asking for just £12.8million to seal his permanent move away, with Barcelona interested.

This would have represented a £29.5million loss for Tottenham and Daniel Levy, but Lo Celso has stepped up in the absence of James Maddison in recent weeks, leading to journalist Paul Brown, speaking to GIVEMESPORT [4 December], to claim he had been given “a new lease of life” at Spurs.

Having scored two goals in his last two games against high-flying sides Aston Villa and Manchester City, the World Cup winner looks like he may finally be making his mark on the first team after Postecoglou handed him a fresh start despite his previous struggles.

Alongside his goal in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City, Lo Celso had a 100% pass completion rate in 79 minutes of play, drew three fouls to ease the pressure on his team, won three of his five attempted duels and made an interception in midfield. [Sofascore]

Despite a loss to Aston Villa, he turned in a similarly impressive display. A 92% passing accuracy was coupled with three key passes and a 100% long-ball accuracy. He drew two fouls and made four tackles showing his industrious work at both ends of the pitch and won seven of his 13 duels.

Given the level of his recent performances, as well as the lack of strength in depth in this Tottenham squad as things stand, it looks likely the club will do a U-turn on their position regarding his sale in January, and he has now played his way into first-team contention.
