Tottenham can get £34m Viktor Gyokeres discount as striker transfer news emerges

Paul Robinson

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson played 175 times for Tottenham between 2004 and 2008, winning the League Cup with Spurs in the 2007/08 season. Since hanging up his gloves in 2017, Robinson has moved into the world of punditry and can be regularly seen or heard on Sky Sports and BBC Radio 5 Live. Tottenham News is now delighted to present Robinson as part of its team of experts.

Tottenham are unlikely to sign Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres despite being available for a cut-price fee, according to Paul Robinson.

Spurs could make a surprise move for the 26-year-old striker if a bargain deal can be agreed, according to GiveMeSport [17 July], with an £84million release clause in his current contract.

The Sweden international has impressed many suitors since joining the Portuguese giants last summer, having netted 43 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions.

However, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson believes the signing poses too much of a risk for Ange Postecoglou's side.

"Those stats are very impressive, but that's only over a short period of time. It's a lot of money for someone who hasn't done it in the Premier League," he said.

"Links to other strikers would be more suited to the way Ange Posteceoglou likes to play. I'm just not sure he'd hit the ground running in the Premier League - it's a big fee and a big risk. I don't think he's done it for long enough.

"I'd struggle to see Tottenham paying that kind of money. If he's available on a cut-price fee, and his release clause is £84million, it'll be between £50million and £60million. I can't see Tottenham paying that much for that type of player."

Tottenham unlikely to sign Viktor Gyokeres as striker transfer wanted

With Spurs still attempting to fill the void left by Harry Kane's departure to Bayern Munich, strikers from all over Europe are being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Gyokeres has been in incredible form since leaving Coventry City last summer, with 29 goals in 33 league matches and a further five goals in the Europa League.

Also an established international player with Sweden, it may not be as much of a risk as some people think, despite his lack of experience in the Premier League.
