Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou right to ignore £17.4m development as Chris Sutton shares verdict

Tottenham are well and truly back in the race for the Champions League this season and pressure is growing in North London with each passing game.

While supporters will be excited to potentially see their side back on Europe’s biggest stage next season, Ange Postecoglou has offered a much more measured verdict on what European qualification would really mean for Spurs.

Reports suggest that any club that qualifies for the Champions League will earn at least £17.4million next season [Give Me Sport, 10 March], but the Spurs boss has repeatedly emphasised that the increase in revenue will not guarantee success.

Speaking in his press conference on Friday (5 April) he said: “I keep saying it, Newcastle made the Champions League last year, did it help them this year?

“We’re not banks, we’re football club. We’re not financial institutions, I don’t get measured by the balance sheet at the end of the year. You can see how difficult it is for a club to juggle the Champions League.

“What I’m saying is, Champions League great, money great, does that mean we’re going to finish third next year? No, in fact, it’s probably going to be more challenging.”

Chris Sutton was quick to praise the Spurs boss for his comments, taking to X on Friday (5 April) to say: “Very logical this from Ange Postecoglou… it’s not all about the money.”

Will Tottenham qualify for the Champions League under Ange Postecoglou?

Postecoglou is right to ignore the financial impact of the Champions League as his entire focus should be on matters on the football pitch as he looks to develop and improve the squad at his disposal week in and week out.

Yes, the financial boost that Champions League football offers cannot be understated, but it won’t mean much if Spurs aren’t able to back it up with another season of European action next year.

Daniel Levy has run Tottenham in a manner that will allow them to spend money in the transfer window this summer, regardless of whether or not they’re in Europe’s premier competition and plenty of players have already been linked with moves to Spurs.

But a top-four finish isn’t a golden ticket to Europe’s elite clubs. While financially it would be an excellent step in the right direction, it won’t be the true measure of a good season.

For Postecoglou in his position as manager, the best thing he can continue to do is ignore the off-the-field drama in North London. After all, as Sutton said, it’s not all about the money.
