Tottenham and Daniel Levy could miss out on multi-million payday after PFA intervention

Tottenham could now be set to miss out on a £3million payday, with the PFA now likely to say their piece about the post-season friendly in Australia, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported via its website on 25 March that, after criticism from Gareth Southgate, the players’ representative board will be next to say their piece about the “ludicrous” decision.

Spurs had arranged a friendly against Newcastle in Australia between the end of the Premier League season and the start of international tournaments amid plenty of controversies.

That controversy arises from the fact that the game would take place just three days following the final round of Premier League fixtures, and ahead of both the European Championships and Copa America, placing a huge strain on the travelling players.

How much would Tottenham look to raise from the post-season clash

The friendly is set to be held at the MCG in Melbourne which can hold up to 100,000 supporters. After Tottenham announced tickets would be sold at £30 per person, the game could raise up to £3million for the club in a very lucrative deal.

That £3million potential fee could yet be boosted again, with food, drink and merchandise sales at the stadium also added to the income from the friendly – with these types of showpiece events often proving profitable from those sales.

A report from The Athletic following the COVID-19 pandemic shared how Manchester United were dealt a significant blow to their income after losing out on a pre-season tour in India, with a drop of almost £50million in commercial income put largely down to the missed tour.

It was also claimed that clubs, particularly in the MLS but also elsewhere, would pay up to £2million for a friendly against an elite club.

While the clash between Tottenham and Newcastle would not raise as much as an entire pre-season tour, nor would it involve a team paying for the clash, it is clear to see the potential income clubs can receive from these types of fixtures and arrangements.

Global brands are often huge drivers of income for top clubs, and the opportunity for Spurs to expand their brand Down Under with a game billed as a homecoming for Postecoglou would be a perfect way of doing that.
