Tottenham already share stance on £750m Premier League update as ‘concern’ issued

Tottenham have been named among the ‘big six’ as those who are not keen on the Premier League’s idea to revamp the revenue stream of pitch-side advertisement.

The Premier League are wanting to change pitch-side advertisements so that they can sell 60 per cent of revenue centrally instead of individual clubs doing so.

Although no official comment has been made by Spurs, the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that the proposal has been met with “resistance” from the ‘big six’.

Tottenham are one of the teams that have internal “concerns” over the idea that would see the Premier League increase their number of existing partners from seven to 10, potentially generating an extra £750million per year.

Though on paper it sounds like a no-brainer, there are smart reasons as to why Joe Lewis and Co. may turn this over completely down.

Tottenham will lose commercial independence with £750m news

As highlighted by The Boy Hotspur, Spurs are ranked ninth around the world for club revenue, even ahead of some major European clubs.

The advertisement change would see the revenue split between the 20 clubs in the Premier League, and though the extra £750m may sound appealing, when analysed it’s not the safe choice to make.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is arguably the best venue in England, and with that, one of the most attractive ones to secure advertising deals.

If Lewis were to accept the Premier League’s offer, the plus is that they would most likely get a guaranteed share of what’s being offered. However, they are losing out on the profits that they can make on their own.

The Lilywhites may suffer a hit to their revenue this season following a poor league campaign, but there will be hopes that things can soon turn around in N17.

The risks that Tottenham run by turning down Premier League’s offer

Tottenham would make the right call to snub the Premier League’s offer, and if anyhting, it shows that the long-term ambition of the club is still their to indepnedlty be a success.

Everyone in the football industry wants to make money, of course, but if relegation occurred, that would be more damaging than anything.

Spurs are currently battling to secure the best possible sponsorship deals for the future, with changes coming to their front-of-shirt sponsor, AIA.

The only problem is that the Lilywhites may not be able to secure the best advertisement moving forward, should their poor form continue.

Less global spotlight and TV appearances mean fewer chances of adverts being seen, resulting in less money overall. Let’s just hope they make the right call.
