Kieran Maguire shares ‘amazing’ £70m FFP update at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham have proved they are one step ahead of the rest of the Premier League when it comes to financial issues after Kieran Maguire explained a new £70million FFP update.

Maguire used Spurs to explain the expenses excluded from FFP rules as he pointed to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a “perfect” example.

A comparison can be drawn to Everton and their building of the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium which has caused the club serious financial issues, leading to points deductions in the Premier League.

Spurs, meanwhile, avoided these issues when building the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium thanks to their clever financial management at the top of the club.

Football finance expert Maguire shared that, while Spurs spend £70million per year on infrastructure costs, compared to some clubs who spend just a tenth of that, that is exempt from FFP rulings.

He also went on to gush over the quality of the facilities, especially the stadium, which was described as “absolutely amazing”, with the club’s investment paying off.

Speaking on The Price Of Football podcast [1 April], Maguire explained: “We have specific expenses which are excluded from FFP.

“You’ve got your infrastructure costs, the depreciation of the stadium, that’s to encourage clubs to invest in facilities and invest in improving what’s available to their talent and training facilities and stadium facilities.

“The perfect example of that would be Spurs. Spurs’ infrastructure costs are about £70million per year, compared to some other clubs in the Premier League which will be a tenth of that. The facilities at Spurs are absolutely amazing, so you can see the benefits there.”

Could Tottenham face trouble from FFP rules?

The allowances given to clubs for growing their infrastructure both in terms of their training grounds and stadiums have allowed Spurs to grow the club without the risk of overspending, putting them in a strong position for the future.

Dan Plumley recently explained to Tottenham Hotspur News that, while everybody else is worrying about overspending due to FFP in the Premier League, the relative lack of spending at Spurs will allow them to go again in the transfer market.

It was explained that the bigger picture has always been the focus for Tottenham despite the frustration that can be caused by a lack of spending, with the growth in matchday revenue and funding from the stadium allowing them to feel comfortable.

This comes amid concerns throughout the Premier League after both Everton and Nottingham Forest were handed points deductions due to breaching the profit and sustainability rules – leading to Paul Robinson advising Spurs to be careful.
