Finance Expert: Tottenham pre-season tour can be really lucrative

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Dan Plumley has described why it makes financial sense for Tottenham to target the Asia-Pacific region on their pre-season tour.

Spurs are currently touring Australia and Asia as part of pre-season. They lost 3-2 to West Ham in Perth on 18 July while their match with Leicester in Thailand was called off on 23 July due to adverse weather conditions.

It seems a long way to travel, especially to play fellow English sides, however, the finance expert has explained why the benefits of a tour such as this cannot be ignored.

“100 per cent, they can be really lucrative,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“It is really difficult to get a figure on how much clubs make on those tours but you’re talking at least a few million pounds, I think that is fairly clear based on some of the averages we have seen over the years.

“We know the number of fans Spurs claim to have in South Korea alone and it is purely down to (Heung-Min) Son, so you’re going to leverage that as much as possible.

“People will say it is a load of travelling for the players and is it really beneficial for the players to be doing that is one side of the debate but from a commercial side of things you can see the tie-up and it is no surprise to see Spurs targeting those regions.”

Although it might be viewed as a hassle for the players to spend so much time travelling ahead of a new Premier League season getting underway, Plumley is spot on.

It will bring in plenty of money for the club with fans around the world desperate to get a glimpse of some of their favourite stars who they would not ordinarily get to see.

In other Tottenham news, one Spurs star could benefit from heading out on loan this summer.
