Daniel Levy to spend £60m to activate Eberechi Eze release clause in Tottenham transfer push

Tottenham News speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Tottenham from Rangers in 2008, winning the 2008 League Cup final in just his third game for the club. The former Scotland right-back went on to make 66 appearances in all competitions for Spurs before he left for Aston Villa in 2011. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Tottenham News' team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from North London.

Tottenham chief Daniel Levy will spend the money needed to sign Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze this summer, according to Alan Hutton.

The England international has enjoyed a sensational end to the season under Oliver Glasner at Selhurst Park, scoring 11 goals and laying on four assists in the Premier League to book his place in the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024.

Eze's good form is understood to have caught the eye of Spurs heading into the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting the 25-year-old has a release clause worth £60million in his current Palace deal [Daily Mail, 7 June].

Although Levy is known for driving a hard bargain when it comes to transfers, Hutton believes the Lilywhites' chairman and Ange Postecoglou will feel that the Englishman is well worth that sort of fee this summer.

"Yeah, I think so for someone who is so talented and at a good age," Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

"Normally when you get a little bit older, you get a little more restricted. You need to play in a certain type of formation, you need to be this sort of player and he just doesn't look like that sort of guy.

"He just goes out and plays with a smile on his face, he plays with a lot of freedom and he's got so much attacking quality. He can score goals, he can assist, these are the type of guys you need and he's been rewarded for his good form by being picked for the England squad.

"I think he could go and be a shining star so £60million is right. You look at some of the prices that are getting banded around now for players that aren't as good, so I can understand that.

"If he's going to be available for that price, I think Levy will spend it."

Will Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sign Eberechi Eze in the summer transfer window?

Spurs may not have been the biggest spenders historically, but Levy will know that he is going to have to open his wallet to help Postecoglou rebuild this summer if he genuinely wants to break back into the top four.

With several players expected to exit in the coming weeks, a lot of room will be cleared from the wage bill and it makes sense that the Lilywhites would be keen to reinvest those funds into a genuine matchwinner like Eze.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy
Daniel Levy is set for a busy summer at Tottenham.

Not only can he add a different dimension to Spurs' attack but he can shoulder the creative burden with James Maddison in the final third. The former Leicester City man faded as last season wore on and he needs some support.

Hopefully, Hutton's confidence won't have been misplaced and Levy will pay the fee required to sign the 25-year-old this summer. He could well be the difference between a fifth and fourth-placed finish next term.
