Daniel Levy must sell £100k-a-week Tottenham man Hugo Lloris after Fraser Forster contract news

Things have started incredibly well for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur this season and a big part of that has been the excellent form of the Australian’s new signings in North London.

While the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have hit the ground running, nobody has arguably started their Spurs career in finer form than Guglielmo Vicario who has impressed in his first 14 Premier League matches.

The Italian’s exceptional start to the campaign has left the other keepers in Tottenham’s squad limited to supporting roles with Fraser Forster and Brandon Austin rooted to the bench, while Hugo Lloris is yet to be named in a match-day squad this season.

It seems unlikely that the Frenchman will return to the bench anytime soon, after Tottenham announced on Wednesday (6 December) that Forster had extended his contract with Postecoglou’s side until the summer of 2025.

That means the Englishman will outlast Lloris in North London with his contract expiring at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and now that Forster’s future is secured, Daniel Levy must surely look to sell the French stopper when the January transfer window opens.

The 36-year-old is a high earner at Tottenham reportedly pocketing £100,000 a week on his current deal, despite not even being named among the substitutes this season. Now that Postecoglou has three settled keepers in his ranks, that money would be better spent elsewhere [The Athletic].

January is looming and with just over three weeks before the transfer window opens, Tottenham are already set to pay Lloris another £300,000 before the turn of the new year having already handed their former captain £1.6 million since the opening game of the campaign.

Realistically, he should have been sold in the summer when there was interest from Saudi Arabia [The Times] but Levy cannot allow the Frenchman to sit his current contract to the end of the season as it will cost Tottenham around £3million.

Forster’s previous contract at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium saw him earn a weekly wage of £66,890 [The Sun], nearly half that of Lloris and it is unlikely that he will have improved those terms in his new deal signed on Wednesday.

If anything it is more likely that the 35-year-old has reduced those terms due to his older age and more reduced role in Postecoglou’s side. He can provide the experienced cover for the next two seasons while Austin continues his development and Levy can focus on moving Lloris on.

The only thing the Frenchman offers in his current non-playing role is experience and now that Forster’s future has been settled, he can be just as effective as Lloris given his age and experience at both club and international level.

Spurs shouldn’t even be too worried about getting a fee for the French international as getting his £100,000 a week wage off of their books would be enough of a boost.
