Daniel Levy and Tottenham set for lucrative payday after Thursday announcement

Daniel Levy has once again taken advantage of Ange Postecoglou’s previous connections in search of a lucrative payday at Tottenham.

It was previously announced that Spurs would be heading to Postecoglou’s native Australia for a post-season visit and friendly fixture with Newcastle United at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday 22 May.

While that decision was not well-received by everyone, it certainly demonstrated Levy’s brilliance when it comes to seeking out creative opportunities to generate revenue in North London.

And the Spurs chairman has once again demonstrated that brilliance after it was announced on Thursday (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 25 April) that Postecoglou will be taking his players to Japan as part of their pre-season preparations.

It will be Tottenham’s first visit to the country in 33 years, with the club set to square off with J1 League champions Vissel Kobe at the Japan National Stadium on Saturday 27 July.

Postecoglou has plenty of fond memories from his time in Japan, having led Yokohama F. Marinos to the J1 League title during his time in charge of the club.

And the Australian has spoken of his excitement about returning to the East Asian country this summer.

Postecoglou said, “I’m delighted to be taking Tottenham Hotspur to Japan this summer for an exciting fixture against Vissel Kobe.”

“Japan is a country I know well from my time managing there. It is full of passionate football fans and I’m looking forward to the players not only sampling the atmosphere of the Japan National Stadium but also experiencing some local culture and supporting good causes while we are there.”

It is no coincidence that Spurs’ first visit to Japan in 33 years just so happens to coincide with Postecoglou’s second pre-season in charge of the club.

Many supporters in Japan will have fond memories of the 58-year-old, and they are therefore more likely to buy a ticket to Tottenham’s clash with Vissel Kobe as well as engage more with the club during their visit.

It could also lead to Spurs creating new fanbases out in Japan, where they might not have previously attracted much interest.

What this all means is more money for Levy, and it is yet another example of the chairman strategically selecting which countries around the world Spurs will visit once the Premier League season finishes.

While they could have travelled to America like many other English clubs will, this decision demonstrates Levy’s brilliance as is a chance for the the club to explore untapped markets which Postecoglou has the keys to unlock the door to.
