Cristian Romero appears to be in line for a significant wage increase at Tottenham after penning a new contract.

The defender has been an integral part of the Lilywhites' plans in recent years, and Thomas Frank will undoubtedly be keen to build his team around him this season.

Romero had been linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer, with Atletico Madrid showing a consistent interest in prizing him away.

However, he now looks destined to excel in a new role as Spurs' club captain.

Romero 'certain' for big pay rise at Tottenham

Romero recently pledged his future to Tottenham by signing a new four-year contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2029.

The new deal is understood to have been in the pipeline for several weeks, but has finally been fully agreed and settled.

The Argentine defender is one of the most important players in the Lilywhites' ranks, and his new terms are likely to reflect that.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - believes that Romero's latest contract is almost guaranteed to see him earn in excess of £200,000-a-week.

“If you wanted to sign Romero today, he’d cost you between £60m and £80m without a doubt, if not more," King said.

“He’s been made club captain, so that’s obviously had an effect on his decision, and I would imagine he’s also had a wage increase.

“On that note, I would say it’s been good business all round.

“I think that Romero will certainly be earning over £200,000-a-week now, I would be very surprised if he isn’t.”

Romero likely to be new highest earner at Spurs

Son Heung-min's Tottenham exit has freed up a significant amount of money for the North Londoners, and now it looks as though Romero will have taken his place as their highest earner.

  • Romero had been on around £165,000-a-week before signing his new deal
  • James Maddison had been Spurs' highest earner on around £170,000-a-week
  • Romero's new contract is almost certain to have propelled him beyond Maddison
  • Figures based on Capology estimates

The 27-year-old was already thought to be on a weekly wage of around £165,000, according to Capology estimates, and his new contract will surely have resulted in a sizeable increase to that figure.

The new club captain has established himself as an impressive defender at the top-level, and his new deal is likely to reflect that.

Now that Spurs have rewarded him for his loyalty, they will be expecting to be repaid with a series of consistently high-quality performances.
