Tottenham slammed over ‘truly shocking’ transfer business as next deal set to be confirmed
Tottenham have made some shocking deals in the transfer market over the last few years.
Joe Lewis is under pressure from Tottenham fans as they sit 14th in the league and have been knocked out of both domestic cups under Thomas Frank.
Tottenham’s recruitment hasn’t been good enough, and they’ve blown millions of pounds on players who haven’t made a big impact.
Dominic Solanke has failed to hit the ground running since his move from Bournemouth, while Xavi Simons hasn’t reached the levels he is capable of.
However, one player who looks set to leave Spurs has been worse than both of them, and that is Argentinian forward Alejo Veliz.
Tottenham fans react to terrible Alejo Veliz transfer as exit details emerge
Spurs signed Veliz for £13m from Rosario Central in August 2023, although after failed loan spells at Espanyol and Sevilla, he was loaned back out to the Argentinian side in the summer.
According to reports from Brazilian outlet UOL, Tottenham will terminate the remaining six months of Veliz’s loan to Rosario Central in order to facilitate a move to Bahia.
Brazilian side Bahia have made a multi-million-pound offer to buy the forward, and an agreement in principle has been reached with the Lilywhites.
The 22-year-old will go down as a signing that had wasted potential, and fans reacted to the news that he may be leaving Spurs on a permanent basis – one describing it as “truly shocking”.
One fan said: “What a dreadful transfer that was. Exactly why I’m not excited one bit about the Brazilian left-back Souza.”
Another supporter added: “That was a waste of money, didn’t even get given a chance.”
On reflection, Veliz’s move was a shocking bit of business, and one that has failed spectacularly.
What did Ange Postecoglou say about Alejo Veliz?
It was a fairly worrying sign that Postecoglou immediately dismissed the idea of Veliz gaining any first-team minutes upon his arrival.
On 12 August 2023, he said: “It will take a while for him – we’ve just got to let him settle. He’s a young guy; it’s a fairly different level.
“He’s one we’re all invested in for the long term, but I wouldn’t expect him to see any minutes over the first part of the season.”
| Club/Season | Appearances | Goals |
| Tottenham (2023-24) | 16 | 5 |
| Sevilla (2023-24) | 29 | 4 |
| Espanyol (2024-25) | 6 | 0 |
| Rosario Central (2025-26) | 8 | 1 |
Veliz had a breakthrough season with Rosario Central in 2023, scoring 11 league goals in 24 appearances.
However, he has scored just 10 goals in senior football since Tottenham signed him, and he has failed to hit the heights he once showed as a 19-year-old.
