Tottenham urged to sanction ‘crazy’ £80m Cristian Romero exit amid contract news

Tottenham could soon be forced to cut ties with Cristian Romero.

The 26-year-old will have two years left on his Spurs contract this summer. Therefore, if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal in North London, Tottenham could be forced to sell Romero to avoid the risk of losing him for free.

Spurs’ mega-money bid for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi late in the winter transfer window seemed to all but confirm that Romero was headed for the exit door this summer.

However, it looks as though Tottenham aren’t willing to lose the defender without a fight.

Tottenham ready mega-money contract for Cristian Romero

As reported by TBR Football (11 February), Tottenham are prepared to make Romero the club’s highest-paid player.

Talks with Romero are already thought to be underway, although the centre-back will need convincing as he is frustrated by the club’s lack of progress since his arrival.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King believes the club could offer Romero as much as £250,000-a-week.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – would prefer to see the World Cup winner sold this summer.

“I don’t think we should be offering him that kind of contract,” Wenham said.

“That sounds crazy because we are 14th in the Premier League and I’m talking about selling our Argentinian World Cup-winning defender. However, he just isn’t available enough.

“He looks as though he is going to miss the majority of this season. Therefore, if there was an option in the summer to double the £40million we spent on him, I would sell Romero.”

Tottenham to accept £80million transfer offer for Cristian Romero?

Tottenham paid around £40m to bring Romero to North London. Therefore, if they were to receive an offer of around £80m from a club such as Real Madrid, that would be difficult to refuse.

However, Romero has hardly featured all season, which presents a problem for Spurs in the long term as well as the short term.

While the player is no doubt extremely talented, his constant injury issues could prevent clubs from making a big-money bid.

Therefore, that would leave Spurs in a difficult situation, especially with the player’s contract running down.
