Tottenham: Unpopular yet ‘unique’ Daniel Levy decision can prove lucrative as expert reacts

John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose is in favour of Daniel Levy’s plan for Tottenham to travel to Australia for a post-season visit.

Spurs recently announced that they would be heading Down Under for Global Football Week in Melbourne.

Their trip will culminate in a friendly with Newcastle United at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday 22 May, which is just three days after Spurs’ final league fixture is set to take place against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane (19 May).

While the plan has left some people angered, including England boss Gareth Southgate, Wenham sees it as a clever move by the Spurs chairman.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, said: “I’ve got no issue with it.

“When you consider the number of games the players have played this season with the absence of Europe and being eliminated relatively early in both cups, they can have no complaints.

“I just think it’s part and parcel of modern football and a unique way of capitalising on a financial opportunity.

“It will be a good chance for some of the younger players to get experience in and around the first-team squad as well, so overall I see more benefits to the trip than negatives.”

Love him or hate him, Levy knows how to make money at Tottenham.

It is understandable why the players and Southgate won’t want the trip to Australia to take place, with the 2024 European Championships in Germany looming large.

However, Wenham is right in suggesting that Spurs’ players haven’t had the most demanding of seasons, and therefore shouldn’t have too many complaints about an extra match before June.

The trip to Australia might be a lengthy one, but Tottenham’s stars will no doubt be travelling in comfort, with the club set for a lucrative boost from the trip.
