Tottenham transfer news: Ange Postecoglou tipped to ‘cut his losses’ in January window, sell Bryan Gil to fund new signings

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Bryan Gil’s move to Tottenham hasn’t worked and the club could afford to let him go during the January transfer window in the face of interest from Spain, according to Paul Robinson.

Mundo Deportivo reported on 15 January that the Spaniard doesn’t want another loan but could accept a permanent move to Real Sociedad, with a deal only thought possible for around €8million [£6.82m].

That would be a significant knock down on the £21.6m Spurs paid on top of sending Erik Lamela to Sevilla two and a half years ago [Sky Sports], but with the 22-year-old “not good enough” for Ange Postecoglou’s style of play Robinson believes the Australian may decide to “cut his losses” this month to fund incoming business.

Gil has already been loaned out twice during his Tottenham career, to Valencia and back to his former club Sevilla, and despite 10 Spurs appearances this season thanks to injuries is likely to have his route further blocked by the pursuit of Club Brugge’s Antonio Nusa [Sky Sports, 19 January].

“He’s a player for me that Tottenham could afford to lose in this window, in January,” Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He doesn’t look like he’s cut out for the Premier League. He’s come into the team in fits and starts but the Premier League looks a bit fast and strong for him. The game seems to pass him by.

“I don’t think the move to Tottenham’s worked for him. We talk about players in other leagues around Europe, I think the way that the Premier League is he’s more suited to other leagues.

“He’s knocked off the ball too easily. You can see that his attitude and his application, his enthusiasm is there, but the quality, the strength, and the ability to play in the Premier League isn’t.

“So he’s one potentially I think Ange may cut his losses on in January and create some space in the squad.

“He’s not good enough for the way Ange wants to play, or for the top level in the Premier League I don’t think. I don’t think he’s physical enough”

In other Tottenham news, Robinson has reacted after a Fabrizio Romano update that an in-form Spurs player is set for a move away this month.
