Tottenham to sign new defender after what happened to Radu Dragusin
Tottenham might be pondering some defensive reinforcement this summer but Radu Dragusin may get more opportunities after struggling on his full debut, Alan Hutton has said.
Centre-back Dragusin arrived from Genoa in a £26.7million deal in January (Sky Sports) but has found himself behind Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven in the pecking order.
An injury to the latter meant he got his first start against Fulham on Saturday (16 March), though it was not a debut to remember as Spurs succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.
Hutton – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – accepts it was not a great outing and said he will have to bounce back as a club like Spurs will always look at ways to improve.
“I know it wasn’t the best performance but I think he can (be the understudy to Van de Ven), I think we have seen that he’s capable,” he said.
“Where I feel for him is he’s come in for a decent fee, he’s not really played all that much. You always move to a team thinking I’m going to be a regular starter, that’s what I’ve come to do, yes I might have to work hard and dislodge somebody but that’s your thoughts moving into a team.
“It’s not really worked out that way, he’s had to be patient and bide his team then be ready for when you get thrown in, so that’s maybe where it’s been hard for him, he’s not really had that time to settle into how they play and then you get thrown in and expected to be a 10 out of 10 player.
“It doesn’t always happen like that, you need a run of games, maybe that will happen now with Van de Ven being out with what looks like a hamstring injury he might get that opportunity but it’s up to him to go and show the manager.
“If it’s not working a team will never stand still they’ll always look to the future but obviously the ball’s in his court he’ll need to bounce back from it.”
Radu Dragusin can bounce back for Tottenham
As Hutton says, it’s a little too early to make a rash judgement on Dragusin, especially given he just has not had time to settle into any rhythm at Tottenham.
It wasn’t the best of displays against the Cottagers, no one is pretending otherwise, but let’s face it who did have a good game in that one?

Tottenham will probably want to bring in an extra defender in the summer window anyway, because they could do with a little more depth at the back.
But Dragusin certainly won’t be written off yet and he’ll get other opportunities to impress under Postecoglou that’s for sure.
In other Tottenham news, the club are set for a lucrative payday after an announcement on Monday.
