Tottenham to ignore Ryan Sessegnon contract option amid new Fabrizio Romano transfer update
Tottenham defender Ryan Sessesgnon doesn’t have a future at Spurs and therefore it makes sense that he will leave on a free transfer, according to Alan Hutton.
The 24-year-old has been plagued by injuries this season and throughout his career with the Lilywhites, only making 52 appearances for Spurs in all competitions in four seasons in North London, only one of which came this term.
Ange Postecoglou’s side do have the option to extend the versatile defender’s contract, which is set to expire next month by an extra year, but reports from Fabrizio Romano (20 May) suggest that he will be allowed to leave as a free agent this summer.
While Hutton thinks that is the right call for all parties involved in the deal, he admits that he does pity the former Fulham man and suggests that injuries have stopped him from maximising his potential in a Tottenham shirt.
“As a player, I feel for him,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“He’s been really unlucky because the injuries that he has had are incredible. He’s not really had that opportunity to really go and show what he is about.
“I played against him when he was at Fulham and I thought he was outstanding from full-back. He was really energetic, he could get up and down, he could score the odd goal and he had everything in his locker.
“It’s just not worked out for him, unfortunately. I can’t remember what they paid for him but £20million rings a bell so of course, within that and his wages they have put a lot of money into him but it’s just not worked out.
“They won’t get a fee because his contract has run out and his future doesn’t look like it will be there so sometimes it is just one of those things in football where it just hasn’t worked.”
Where will Ryan Sessegnon go as summer Tottenham exit confirmed?
When Sessegnon arrived in North London, his signing was greeted with plenty of excitement from pundits and supporters alike. Unfortunately, that potential was never quite realised in a Spurs shirt and it seems like it never will be.
With Postecoglou’s defensive options limited for much of the season, with Destiny Udogie struggling with injury whilst Ben Davies and Emerson Royal failed to step up, there was a space there for the 24-year-old to fill.
However, the former Fulham man was never fit enough this year to force his way back into Postecoglou’s thinking and now it seems as though he walk away this summer without Daniel Levy or Spurs pocketing a single penny.
Hopefully, another Premier League club will take the gamble and offer Sessegnon the opportunity to get his career back on track. He is still very young and the ability is still there and it would be a shame if he fades away into obscurity.
