Tottenham: Timo Werner future in doubt as Ange Postecoglou set to look at other transfer options
Tottenham loanee Timo Werner has to impress Ange Postecoglou in the coming weeks or Spurs will look at other options in the summer transfer window, according to Alan Hutton.
The German international is still looking for his first goal since making the temporary switch to North London during the January transfer window, but has managed to pick up two assits in his first five Premier League matches.
Spurs are able to make Werner’s stay permanent during the summer transfer window but have already been linked with a host of other forward options, most notably Barcelona winger and Brazil international Raphinha [Paul O’Keefe, 5 February].
While Hutton admits that the links with the former Leeds star may be little more than a rumour, he thinks Werner now has to force his way back into the starting XI to show Postecoglou and Daniel Levy that he would be a better investment.
“A lot of this will be rumour,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“So much stuff goes on behind the scenes with agents, so we don’t know if this is an actual fact. Obviously, Werner will know through speaking to his agent and club what kind of both they are going down.
“It’s up to him, he’s got this opportunity to come and shine. If he doesn’t take it and then he finds himself out of the team and he’s on the bench just getting five minutes here or there, they’re probably not going to want to buy him, they’ll probably look elsewhere.
“He’s got a fantastic opportunity in front of him and he has to take it. If not, they’ll look at other options.”
Will Tottenham sign Timo Werner permanently this summer?
Postecoglou and Spurs are already spoilt for choice going forward when everybody is fit and available, with the likes of Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Werner all competing for a starting spot week in and week out.

That means that Werner has to do something to make him stand out for the crowd and after a good start in North London, the 27-year-old has slowed down and showed signs of his wasteful tendencies in front of goal.
Hopefully, with an extra week on the training field, the German international will have got even more up to speed with Postecoglou’s tactics and he may now be ready to really get his Tottenham career up and running.
