Tottenham: ‘Time is up’ for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as brand new summer transfer update emerges

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s time in North London is up and he will be considering his options ahead of the transfer window, according to Alan Hutton.

The 28-year-old has been in and out of the side under Ange Postecoglou this season, making 31 Premier League appearances despite only being named in the starting XI on six occasions as he has fallen down the pecking order.

Reports have emerged suggesting Spurs are interested in signing Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi this summer, alongside several other Premier League sides as Postecoglou looks to add to his options in the middle of the park [HITC, 8 April].

While Hutton admits that he is surprised Hojbjerg didn’t leave North London at the end of last season, he thinks the potential addition of Ndidi will show the Danish international that he is surplus to requirements at Tottenham.

“I would say so, we know what type of players they are,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“Hojbjerg, there has been a conversation for a while now that maybe his Tottenham career was over. Ange has brought him back in from time to time and he has played minutes but not as regularly as he would want.

“I genuinely believe he would have left before now but with a new manager coming in, he probably thought he had an opportunity to force his way in, but it has not quite happened.

“Again, if they’re going to bring in a midfielder who is relatively similar then you’re thinking maybe my time is up here so he’s somebody who will be looking at his options again come the summer.”

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg set for Tottenham exit as Ange Postecoglou eyes Wilfried Ndidi transfer

Postecoglou has favoured a midfield combination of Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr for much of the season so far and it became clear against Newcastle United that Rodrigo Bentancur is the most obvious deputy in North London.

That leaves very little room for Hojbjerg to feature week in and week out in North London so it may well be best for all parties if he moves on this summer, especially if Postecoglou is keen to add to his options.

Nididi has a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt and while the Nigerian has failed to set the Championship alight this term, he could add a different dimension to Spurs’ side given his presence in the middle of the park.

Whether or not Tottenham get that move over the line this summer remains to be seen, but it does appear clear that Hojbjerg’s days in North London are numbered.
