Tottenham: Time at Spurs is up for Japhet Tanganga as newspaper story emerges on Sunday

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King believes Japhet Tanganga’s time at Tottenham is over after an update emerged regarding the defender’s contract in North London.

Tanganga is currently playing his football on loan with Millwall in the Championship with his Tottenham deal set to expire this summer, although the club do have an option to extend his stay by 12 months.

According to the Sunday Mirror (17 March), Tanganga is yet to learn whether or not Spurs will take up that option or let him leave for free in July.

Tanganga is free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, although the 24-year-old is currently focused on finishing the season strongly with the Lions.

And King believes that regardless of whether or not Spurs take up the option inserted in the centre-back’s contract, his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is coming to an end.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “I can’t see Tanganga getting back into the Tottenham team, not with the centre-backs they have at the club.

“If I were Tanganga I would be looking for regular first-team football. If Spurs did extend his contract he would then perhaps become an option for Millwall to take on loan again.

“He has done well at Millwall, he had a bit of a slow start but his performances have picked up now.

“He’s playing regularly, and I think a move to the Championship might suit him, perhaps to a team at the top end of the table fighting for promotion to the Premier League.

“That would allow him to play regularly and Daniel Levy would be able to get some money for him.”

Will Japhet Tanganga quit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer?

Levy finds himself in an interesting position where he must decide whether or not to extend a player’s contract not because he wants to keep the player, but because he might be able to sell him on.

It seems pretty clear that Tanganga has no future under Ange Postecoglou, and unless something miraculous happens between now and June, it is hard to imagine that Tanganga will be a Spurs player come September.

From his perspective, he will likely be hoping that Spurs let him leave on a free so that he can continue playing regular football with a new club.

However, for Spurs, they must now decide whether or not extending their academy graduate’s contract is worth the hassle.
