Tottenham: Terms mooted for permanent Timo Werner transfer amid new Fabrizio Romano update

Tottenham will be keen to sign Timo Werner permanently this summer, if the structure and terms of the deal suit Daniel Levy, according to Alan Hutton.

The German has had a mixed loan spell in North London, scoring twice in the Premier League and laying on a further three assists in 12 appearances as Ange Postecoglou’s side look to book their place in the Champions League next season.

Spurs have the option of making the deal permanent this summer for a reported fee of around £15million [Sky Sports, 10 January] and the 28-year-old is enjoying his time under Postecoglou and would be keen to make the switch permanently [Fabrizio Romano, 6 April].

While Hutton has previously tipped Levy and Postecoglou to look elsewhere for a new number nine this summer, he admits that there could be a deal to be struck, as long as the terms suit those in charge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“I think if the fee is right I could see it happening,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I’ve always said that he’s a decent player on his day, he just needs too many opportunities to score a goal. With his pace out wide he’s a threat, so he can give you something different and he’s very direct.

“I just don’t think he’d be that go-to guy that is going to get you all the goals you could possibly need from that position. That being said, if the fee is right, the wages and the structure are right, I think he’s a good option to have.

“He gives you that pace out wide and he can create something so it is all going to come down to that.”

Will Tottenham sign Timo Werner permanently during the summer transfer window?

As Hutton suggested, Werner is never going to be a Harry Kane replacement in North London, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be successful at Spurs in the long run in a more creative role if his move was made permanent.

The German international is wasteful in front of goal and does tend to miss chances that he really should convert, but he also adds a spark in the final third and in transition that could be so important in Postecoglou’s system.

Whether or not Spurs will pursue this deal likely won’t be decided until the end of the season, but it does feel as though this is a gamble worth taking for all parties, especially considering the fairly reasonable transfer fee.

Hopefully, Werner will finish the season strongly and help Spurs into the top four to give Postecoglou and Levy a decision to make.
