Tottenham take ‘risk’ after official transfer announcement on Monday

Tottenham have recalled Dane Scarlett from his season-long loan spell at Oxford United.

As confirmed via the club’s official website on Monday (20 January), the striker has returned to North London after falling out of favour at the Kassam Stadium.

Spurs were expected to hold talks with Oxford United about Scarlett, and as reported by Alasdair Gold via his personal X account (20 January), the decision to recall the 20-year-old is based on his lack of playing time in the Championship, with the England youth international expected to be loaned out again this month.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – isn’t so sure how easy it will be to find a new club for Scarlett at this point in the winter transfer window.

“Tottenham have taken a risk here,” Wenham said.

“At this point in the window, many clubs would have secured the players they need. Therefore, there might not be space at many clubs for Scarlett to head out on loan.

“Hopefully, if another club were to come in and say, ‘Look, we’ve got our striker out injured, we can guarantee Scarlett minutes,’ then that would be ideal. We’ve seen that with Matthew Craig who has moved to Mansfield Town and is already starting games.”

Tottenham recall Dane Scarlett from loan with Oxford United

If Scarlett wasn’t starting regularly at Oxford United, there was little point in leaving him there. Therefore, the decision to recall the forward is a smart one.

However, Spurs and Scarlett’s attention will now turn toward what is next for the youngster. This is yet another loan spell which hasn’t gone to plan. As a result, the next one needs to be the right one.

Craig was recently recalled from Barnsley and quickly sent back out on loan to Mansfield Town, with Ange Postecoglou clearly not considering the midfielder part of his first-team plans.

Therefore, Scarlett will hope that his immediate future can also be resolved quickly.

In other Tottenham news, the club are expected “to move quick” as a Postecoglou sack update emerges.
