Tottenham supporters voice frustration after ‘farcical’ incident v Southampton

Tottenham supporters in attendance for the 3-1 win against Southampton on Sunday could be heard booing after one “farcical” moment in the match.

Ange Postecoglou eased some of the pressure on him with victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 6 April, which confirmed Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League.

Tensions were high in North London ahead of kick-off as supporters took to the street to protest against Daniel Levy and ENIC.

However, there was one moment in the match which saw those same supporters aim their frustration elsewhere for a brief period.

Tottenham supporters furious after VAR incident v Southampton

Brennan Johnson inspired Tottenham to victory by scoring twice in the first half against the Saints.

However, Spurs could have gone in at the break three to the good had VAR not overruled Lucas Bergvall’s goal, with the Premier League making an official announcement about the incident.

Richard Keys was left fuming as VAR took almost five minutes to adjudge that Cristian Romero was offside in the build-up and the goal should, therefore, be disallowed.

And ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes VAR is ruining football.

“It is ridiculous that it took five minutes for VAR to rule out Bergvall’s goal,” King said.

“A lot of people were unhappy about that situation, and I agree with them. It was an unusual goal anyway, I’m not sure Bergvall actually realised he had made contact with the ball until it ended up in the net.

“I think the supporters were just as surprised as he was. However, that was then followed by a farcical five minutes trying to figure out who was offside. VAR is killing football. The game starts to flow, and then it is stopped by VAR.

“Supporters were booing after 60 seconds and those boos practically continued for the full five minutes, and then the resulting conclusion came, which was laughable. I do not agree with VAR, as the referees off the pitch are making the same mistakes as those on it.”

Postecoglou will not be happy after VAR incident at Tottenham

Postecoglou was not happy with the amount of time taken by VAR to rule out Pape Matar Sarr’s strike against Chelsea in the 1-0 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge on Thursday (3 April).

Therefore, the 59-year-old is unlikely to be best pleased by this incident either. However, it didn’t make much of a difference to the outcome of the match.

As a result, the Spurs players must move on and focus on the first leg of their last-eight Europa League tie with Eintracht Frankfurt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (10 April).
